STEPS for Girls Program

The Science, Technology and Engineering Preview Summer for Girls (STEPS for Girls) program began at the University of Wisconsin-Stout in 1997. The mission of the program is to inspire young women to prepare for and pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. The program is designed for girls entering seventh grade and exposes the participants to a broad range of interesting STEM career options and builds confidence in their ability to learn and succeed in technical fields. Through high-energy and engaging STEM activities, campers build and analyze their very own obstacle avoiding robot, from scratch, that they take home. Campers are guided by an instructional team of over 90% women, including UW Stout faculty and industry leaders.

Due to an unforeseen circumstance, a decision has been made to put the Science, Technology, Engineering Preview Summer (STEPs) summer camp for girls on hiatus for this summer (2020) and possibly beyond.  A challenge has been filed with the federal Office of Civil Rights due to the single-sex nature of the camp, leading to the decision to put STEPS on hold for summer 2020.
